FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Innovative
Math Program Being Pilot Tested in CPS
CINCINNATI, OHIO 06.03.2004
This spring approximately 750 fourth, fifth and sixth grade
Cincinnati Public School students pilot tested the Junior
Investor™ Program. The program tackles mathematics and
financial literacy education – issues that are both
of critical national importance. Students are given a fun,
real world context for doing math exercises by having them
track a simulated personal investment in the stock market
over a 10-week period.
This pilot test brought local companies, schools and a university
together to help students not only receive a better academic
education, but also to help them to understand the long term
benefits of saving and investing.
The University of Cincinnati, Economic Center for Education
and Research. is the in-school program partner. They provide
teacher training and curriculum development guidance. Funds
for the pilot were provided by The Federated Foundation. Newspapers
were distributed by Newspapers In Education so students could
look up the Dow and Nasdaq numbers.
Pat Sand of St. John's said, "My
kids really look forward to doing Junior Investor. They picked
up their booklets immediately, took out their calculators
and got to work. I had three kids volunteer today who normally
don't do that. I really think that this is how we should be
teaching math!"

fall can sign up at http://www.junior-investor.com.
